PT-RAPS FUNDRAISING CD RECORDING - CYMRIC & PORTHCAWL MALE VOICE CHOIR AND LADIES HARMONY CHOIR
OUR LEGAL FIGHT & FUNDRAISING PT-RAPS is a residents organisation and charity that was set up to lobby for better air quality in Port Talbot. The town is facing a number of threats from new polluting developments that no one else wants. In 2007 Port Talbot recorded 46 exceedences of PM10 air pollution. This is far more than the 35 allowed by the EU directives. In April 2008 PT-RAPS applied for Judicial Review in an attempt to quash planning permission for the world’s largest wood burning power station proposed for Port Talbot. In the hearing Justice Collins ruled that it was a matter for the Environment Agency and consequently we were unsuccessful. We believe that the planning laws do not adequately protect people against further pollution.
We are a resident’s organization and the majority of the group are on low incomes or retired. Justice Collins rejected our application for cost protection in the hearing and imposed costs of £20,000, which were in addition to our own legal costs of £25,000. We feel the costs imposed were totally against the spirit of the Aarhus convention, which should protect claimants from unreasonable costs in environmental cases. We are still in the process of paying these costs off to the Governments Treasury Solicitors. Funds still needed = £5,200 Slowly the costs are being paid off. We are currently raising funds through car boot sales, small events and music concerts. We would like to pay special thanks to the Cymric and Porth Cawl Males voice choirs for fundraising concerts and also to the generous indivual support from Dr Jones and SIlvia Needs. If you would like to make a small donation to help us continue our fight against the largest biomass power station please send cheques payable to PT-RAPS c/o Allan Norman - PT-RAPS treasurer , 7 Baglan Heights, Baglan, Port Talbot.
