Why the name "Residents Against Power Stations"?

Our town has had a poor record on air quality. Our residents group is against further power stations being imposed on Port Talbot when there are other ways of generating energy such as wind, wave, tidal, solar and geothermal that do not create harmful pollution and further carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2007 Port Talbot recorded 46 exceedences of PM10 air pollution.

In April 2008 PT-RAPPS was unsuccessful in its attempt to apply for Judicial Review in a hearing at the High Court (based on Port Talbot's poor record of air quality). Justice Collins ruled that it was a matter for the Environment Agency. We believe that the planning laws do not adequately protect people against further pollution.

Justice Collins rejected our appeal and imposed costs of £20,000, which were in addition to our own legal costs of £25,000. Our group is made up of local residents. We feel the costs imposed were totally against the spirit of the Aarhus convention. We are still in the process of paying these costs off to the Governments Treasury Solicitors. We still need to raise a further £7,500

Funds still needed £7,500
